Severn

We would like to welcome you to Severn, the school’s senior house for girls aged 14 to 18. I am Amanda Huckstep and my role at Severn is a Houseparent, which means I am a mother figure to our boarders while they are at school. I live in Severn with my husband John, who is a House Assistant, and our two children, Jenna and Mason who are in Years 11 and 8 at Kingham Hill and our labradoodle Scruffy, who is the house mascot and dresses up of our inter-house matches!

I have been a part of the Kingham Hill community for nearly two years as a parent after we moved from America, and enjoyed it so much that I applied to be a Houseparent! I started in Severn in 2016 and have had the best experience getting to know all the girls that live in the house. Family is something that is important to myself and Bethan Rayner, our Deputy Houseparent and we encourage all our girls to treat Severn as a family home.

As a house we like to use a quote from John Wesley as our motto: “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as you ever can.” This is something that is important to us as house family because it sums up the kind of attitude we encourage our girls to have.

To help make the house feel more like a home Bethan, myself and our Pastoral Assistant (PA) Sune Van der Westhuizen do lots of activities with our girls. We hold regular pudding nights, bonfires and game nights to help the girls get to know each other better. Every Tuesday evening we have a theme night where we eat snacks, play games, listen to music and watch films – so far we’ve done Mexican night, bonfire night and Christmas night to name a few.
