Christian Ethos

“Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Psalm 127:1”

That verse was an important text for our Founder, the Christian philanthropist C.E.B. Young. He trusted in the Bible as the Word of God, and in the good news about Jesus that it reveals. We share that trust as the foundation of our common life as a school.

We warmly welcome pupils from all faith backgrounds and none, and we believe that our Christian ethos provides the best possible basis for them to grow as public citizens and in personal character.

The teachings of the Bible provides the root to many of our most important values; democracy, liberty, and rule of law rest on the freedom and dignity of human beings, and on the need for restraint in our capacity for wrongdoing.

We are committed to the sanctity of human life, and our teaching in PSHE reflects a biblical understanding of gender, sexuality, and marriage.

Above all we believe that love for God and neighbour should direct our hearts and our actions, and we encourage an atmosphere marked by respect, gentleness, and kindness.

"The pupils' spiritual awareness is extremely good & the Christian ethos of the school permeates all relationships, engendering mutual respect & tolerance for others."  ISI, 2014
