Octagon is our academic society for the school’s most gifted pupils. These pupils engage with extended studies and critical thinking, hear specialist speakers and enjoy the honour of wearing a distinctive tie. Gifted pupils are identified and offered initial specialist input, challenge and encouragement. From these, seven from each year group are normally invited to join Octagon. They are the only pupils in the school permitted to sit at the Founder’s historic octagon-shaped table. Master responsible, Neill Stannard, takes the eighth and final place. Pupils who qualify on the grounds of their ability also need to receive the nomination of their tutor. The school is looking for enthusiastic learners. As well as helping pupils grapple with complex academic problems, learn to argue persuasively and think creatively, they will be encouraged to develop in civility and integrity and to understand virtues such as wisdom, justice, moderation and courage. |
