The Duke of Edinburgh Award aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development to young people. There are four key sections to the award.
Service
This may involve helping others, the community or the environment. Some of our pupils have been involved with helping out at daycare centres, crèches and primary schools. Others have chosen involvement within the CCF or Scouts.
Skill
Here the emphasis is on developing personal interests. This may involve learning a musical instrument, drama, art, photography, etc.
Physical
Students are encouraged to pursue an active lifestyle by participation in a sport or following a personal training programme.
Expedition
Following training and practice trips the students plan and carry out a final expedition during which they will be assessed on their team work, navigation and camp craft. This may take place within the New Forest, Peak District, Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons.
The Award is available at Bronze, Silver and Gold Level with the duration and demand of the above sections varying accordingly.
Every year many of our pupils volunteer to join this internationally recognised scheme and a substantial number will go on to achieve the award at Gold Level. The Gold award is often presented by HRH Prince Philip and will take place at St James's Palace, Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace.
