Kingham Hill pupil chosen to present royal posy to Queen at Commonwealth Day Observance
Wed 3rd April 13
On Monday 11 March, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma, The Rt HonThe Lord Howell of Guilford and Commonwealth High Commissioners joined 2,000 guests at the Commonwealth Day Observance at Westminster Abbey.
Her Majesty The Queen's traditional Commonwealth Day message was played in the Abbey, in which The Queen celebrated the 2013 Commonwealth theme, 'Opportunity through Enterprise'.
2013 Commonwealth Essay Competition participant, 13 year old Danika, from Kingham Hill School, Chipping Norton was chosen from amongst 1,000 young people to present Her Majesty's Royal posy at the Commonwealth Day Observance on Monday. After much excitement on the journey to London we arrived to find that sadly The Queen was still not well enough to attend but, nevertheless, all our participating pupils and staff had a truly memorable day.
Danika had been chosen because of our enterprising and innovative 'Coppers to Water' charity campaign. The 'Coppers to Water' campaign was an initiative by students at Kingham to raise money for a clean water initiative in Ethiopia. Through a range of measures, including a 'poverty lunch', a sponsored swim and numerous bake sales, students managed to exceed their target of raising £3,500 proving that if enough people pool their coppers something  big can be achieved!
The full amount raised came to be $9,047 (around £6,400).

Coppers to Water Freshwater Project. Final fundraising total
Wed 3rd April 13
We are delighted to announce that we have surpassed our original target of $5,000 by some way.  With our best estimates of exchange rates for the final donations as they are processed, we believe that the final amount passed to charity:water will be $9,047 (around £6,400).
The coppers to water team would like to thank so many people in the Kingham Hill community for their support of the project for clean water in a community in Ethiopia.  Our pupils have very much taken this on board and in addition we have had contributions of many sorts from parents, support staff, governors, trustees, former pupils and other friends of the school. Thank you to all who took the time and trouble to help – it has been very much appreciated.
