Boarding school in Oxfordshire
We understand that finding the right boarding school is a big decision as the chosen destination is going to be school and home for the next five to seven years. For many pupils, this will be their first time away from home, so it is important that to know that the time spent outside school will be comfortable, enjoyable and there are opportunities for fun.
Kingham Hill is a majority boarding school in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, with over 60% of our pupils living on site in one of seven boarding houses. Most of our boarders are British, but we also have pupils from all over the world who call ‘The Hill’ their home.
We have provided a home away from home for generations of pupils over the last 130 years – and we pride ourselves on creating an environment where everyone feels part of the family. We can do this as our houses have far fewer pupils than many boarding schools, with an average of 20 – 35 per house. This means they feel like large family homes and everyone has an opportunity to play a key part within their house.
As most of our pupils are boarders, it means that life doesn’t stop when lessons do. There are a myriad of activities, trips and visits to keep our boarders entertained in the evening and weekends to ensures that life at Kingham Hill is productive and stimulating with opportunities to learn and grow. These include pizza and film nights, craft activities, BBQs and in the summer there are waterslides, campfires and inflatables too. Winter offers time for pumpkin carving and sparklers as well as the popular pudding club. There is plenty of time to use the gym and outside space after lessons, and at weekends there are trips off site to local Cotswold towns as well as those to theme parks or to the seaside.
The pastoral care offered within the houses ensures that every pupil has a team of caring professionals who are there to offer them the support and guidance they need. These include two Houseparents, and a pastoral assistant, and several tutors (one per year group) who are allocated to each house. There is always someone on hand to provide advice, or to help remind them when their music lesson is or not to forget their sports match!
The seven boarding houses are beautiful Victorian homes built traditionally by local craftsmen in Cotswold stone. Our Founder spared no expense in their construction and we have continued in this tradition by ensuring that they are modern and airy homes which meet the needs of our pupils.
Most pupils are full boarders; however there is the opportunity for weekly boarding where pupils return home on Friday evening.
Kingham Hill School has a strong community spirit because it is a majority boarding school; it defines and ensures the life and family atmosphere of the school.
The stability of boarding allowed me to flourish and gain confidence both inside and outside the classroom. Danika
