GCSE Physical Education

Exam Board: Pearson Edexcel

Why should I choose this subject

GCSE PE at Kingham is an excellent way to begin a career in sport or a way of enhancing your love of sport by studying and developing your knowledge into how to train or how the body works to keep you exercising.

What does the subject consist of?

  • Anatomy and Physiology (the body systems and effects of exercise)
  • Fitness and Training
  • Performance Enhancing Drugs
  • Injuries and Injury Prevention
  • Health & Well-being
  • Sports Psychology
  • Socio-Cultural Influences in Sport

How is the subject assessed?

60% theory, made up of 2 exams. 1 hour 45 minutes (90 marks) and 1 hour 15 minutes (70 marks).

40% Coursework, including a personal exercise program (PEP) and 3 practical sports. The requirements are 1 individual sport, 1 team sport and then a free choice from the list of sports available for moderation.

Whom does the subject suit?

This subject is an ideal prerequisite for CTech Sport which we offer here at Kingham Hill. This could then lead to numerous degrees under the sports and health umbrella. There will always be a desire to improve sports performance and with it, the need for young motivated sports people to enter the profession.

What else should pupils consider before choosing this subject?

Something to take into account before choosing GCSE PE is a pupil’s sporting ability. Whilst pupils do not have to be an elite athlete, they will need to have sporting ability in at least 3 sports (ideally 4). It is important to say that playing in the boarding/day house with their friends is not really a required standard. Ideally, we would be looking at pupils playing for the school team.
