Back to School Memories (1952)

Back to School Memories (1952)

We had this wonderful memory sent to us today from a Hillian recalling life at Kingham in the 1950s.  The days of 'old' Plym and journeys to Top School....

"I’m reminded that you will be starting a new Scholastic Year with a new intake of students on the Hill and I’ve thought of my own first months in 1952. In those days we had our lessons in Plymouth and only came up to Top School for Chapel, the Gym and Assemblies. I remember at my first assembly, Mr. Woollan, the Warden giving us news of Old Boys who were doing their National Service in the Army in Korea. I guess to a small boy brought up in a post-war and militarized environment this would have interested me and why I remembered it. In those days the “Chippy Dick” ran between Kingham Station and Chipping Norton and the sound of the train running up and down the valley below Plymouth was a regular sound reaching us in the classroom and dorm at Plymouth. This would have also been the time of year when we played “conkers”. There was an avenue of Horse Chestnut trees leading to Plymouth provided an oversupply of conkers for the game the game. Just some memories!"
