One of the key elements in learning to fly is practise.
Practise flying hours are key to helping prepare our RAF cadets for their live flying sessions.
It has been our vision to make this possible by introducing a flight simulator environment to enable them to continue what they have learnt in both the classroom and up in the air.
The need for this has been brought into stark relief due to recent months of lockdown and current COVID restrictions.
As a Contingent, we aim to provide activities and training that keep the cadets engaged with the fullest range of opportunities. For the RAF cadets, these opportunities will be more limited than most, as it seems likely that due to the pandemic, flying and gliding activities will remain closed for the coming year.
Last year, several of our senior cadets achieved their blue and bronze cadet flying and gliding wings- a superb achievement. We are keen not to lose this momentum and with that in mind, we are asking for help to ensure our RAF cadets can continue to learn flying and navigation techniques.
Our target for this project is £5000. Our vision is to create a dedicated RAF Cadet flying simulation space at KHS. The scope for this project includes:
- Flight simulator software
- An ultrawide, curved 43” screen which will deliver the wraparound peripheral vision a pilot would have from a cockpit. This will also enable other cadets to watch and be part of the learning.
- Physical flight instrument controls such as a flight joystick, throttle and rudder pedals.
- A PC capable of running sufficient graphics quality (currently there are no PC’s capable of this within the school ).
If we reach this goal we would be able to introduce VR which would give the cadets an immersive experience - very different from the screen but equally beneficial. Such a safe and exciting environment will enable our Senior cadets to train whilst also mentoring our younger cadets (and in so doing develop their leadership skills).
Although there are currently restrictions on visitors visiting the Hill, we would also be grateful for the assistance of former flying Hillians, to help coach and develop our cadets with these skills.
