Recently, Paul Davies (Greenwich 1987-1992) returned to Kingham Hill for the school's first Careers Fair, to speak with pupils about his career in journalism and his current role as a Global Banking Columnist at Bloomberg Opinion.
We later caught up with Paul to discuss his journey and the lasting impact Kingham Hill had on him.
Paul’s passion for journalism began early. “I was always curious about the world and loved watching the news with my parents,” he recalls. His interest in politics and economics grew during his time at Kingham Hill, where teachers like Mr. Fox and Mr. Sangster played a key role in shaping his future career.
After school, Paul joined the Financial Times, where he was mentored by industry leaders, including Gillian Tett, during the 2007-2009 financial crisis. “I learned so much during that period. It was intense, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It shaped how I approach storytelling.”
Looking back on his time at Kingham Hill, Paul credits the school for instilling resilience and mental discipline. “School taught me how to push through tough tasks, which has been invaluable in journalism.”
For Paul, journalism remains exciting because it’s a constant learning experience. “Every day brings something new—whether it’s people, companies, or events. Landing a great story is the best feeling.”
One of his most memorable moments came during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, when Paul uncovered the "dash for cash" story. “It was a unique moment, and I knew it was something special. The story went viral, with over 500,000 readers in 24 hours.”
Paul’s advice for aspiring journalists is simple: “Just start—whether it’s writing, making videos, or podcasts. The more you practice, the better you’ll get. Experience is key.”
From his formative years at Kingham Hill to becoming a respected voice at Bloomberg Opinion, Paul’s journey is a testament to the curiosity, resilience, and discipline that the school helped nurture, leaving a lasting impact on both his career and the world of journalism.
