Speech & Drama
The Performing Arts calendar provides a wide range of whole school events throughout the academic year. Every pupil who expresses an interest is included, reflecting the school ethos of ‘work hard, play hard, and serve well’. The annual school musical is one such highlight, as it involves pupils from all year groups. This is supplemented by other smaller scale productions. The department also has two internal drama spaces to support the delivery of the co-curricular programme. There are also for pupils to be involved, be it treading the boards or backstage. Recent productions have included:
- The Wizard of Oz
- National Theatre Connections Festival: pupils have the opportunity to perform new writing at the National Theatre and other new writing festivals
- Oliver Twist
- Sound of Music
The department very much promotes an inclusive and nurturing culture, through the Pupil Showcase. Each play is directed by senior pupils and overseen by a member of staff. Previous productions have included Faustus and The Borgias.
The department also offers LAMDA lessons to pupils of a wide age range, from Junior School through to Sixth Form, and prepares pupils for graded LAMDA examinations. These are offered as Solo and Duologue LAMDA Acting lessons as well as one to one LAMDA Speaking in Public lessons, providing a scope for additional qualifications. Our pupils consistently achieve outstanding results year on year; and the Speech and Drama concert in the Summer term is an excellent way of celebrating our pupil successes.
Other key events include:
- Drama workshops delivered in-house by renowned industry experts (Frantic Assembly)
- Regular theatre visits
