BTEC Engineering

Course overview

A BTEC in Engineering is a great choice for pupils looking for a practical and creative qualification. The course aims to provide students with the relevant skills and knowledge that employers value, as well as the confidence to progress into a fulfilling, exciting career. Engineering covers a broad variety of roles and it involves the application of scientific principles and practical knowledge to transform ideas and materials into products and systems safely and support them during their lifetime. This qualification has a focus on a broad range of engineering specialist areas. Learners taking this qualification will study mandatory content covering:

• Engineering principles and mathematics
• Health and safety, team work and interpreting and creating computer-aided engineering
• Drawings
• Design and manufacture of products.

Assessment

The course has a mixture of internal and external assessments.  Two thirds of the course is externally assessed.

• Unit 1: Externally assessed - One paper lasting 2 hours - 33% of marks.
• Unit 2: Three internally assessed assignments - 17% of marks.
• Unit 3: Externally assessed - supervised assessment period of 8 hours to be completed within a 5 day period - 33% of marks.
• Unit 4: Internal assessment based on option.
