Mathematics

At Kingham Hill School we believe that the foundations of Mathematics are established at Key Stage 3.  In particular, we focus on the basic techniques of algebra and the manipulation of numbers in fraction and decimal form. Of course, we follow the national curriculum but with a distinctly Kingham Hill flavour which understands the discipline of mathematics as well as the need to instil a determination to find a solution.

As a non-selective school, Mathematics is the only subject which is streamed. It is important to stretch our more able mathematicians whilst giving time to those who lack confidence. The syllabus is designed to build on each of the subjects prescribed in the national curriculum, focussing on a different aspect each year:

• Numbers
• Algebra
• Ratios, proportion and rates of change
• Geometry and Measures
• Probability
• Statistics

The aims of the curriculum are to instil fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills.  The latter is a life skill which, with the aid of mathematical processes, we practise in all our lessons.  We also aim to develop an inquisitive mind and an enjoyment in mathematics however, we understand that this is not always possible.

Key Stage 3 is the preparation for the GCSE years. 1st and 2nd Form are the ‘fundamentals years’ but, as Mathematics is a compulsory subject, our focus in 3rd Form is to ensure that pupils are correctly assessed for their entry level into Key Stage 4.
