Spanish

Studying Spanish presents exciting opportunities for the future. Equipped with English and Spanish, you will be able to speak to around one billion people in their native language. Imagine doing your dream job abroad!  You could live in Madrid, Mexico City or Managua if you speak Spanish. Holidays abroad are much more enjoyable if you don’t have any problems being understood by the locals. Add to this the fact that having a Modern Language under your belt is increasingly seen by universities and employers as the sign or a well-rounded, intelligent young person.

Spanish in the First to Third Form is all about laying the foundations for future success in the subject.  We believe passionately in instilling a fundamental understanding of the grammar of the language from Día D. Supported by sound cognitive science, we will soon be teaming up with Language Cubes Ltd to provide a unique grammatical grounding in the language for all beginners.  We add to this the explicit teaching of phonics, building on the methods the pupils will have used in acquiring language skills in English at primary school.

Alongside this innovative approach, pupils will cover all the expected areas of an elementary Spanish curriculum, ranging from being able to talk about one’s family, friends and social activities to ordering food and drinks in cafés and restaurants.

Pupils are taught by the following teachers:

Mr Metcalfe (Housemaster of Clyde House and Teacher of Modern Languages – BA Sheffield) has taught at Kingham Hill since 2010. Before then he lived in Paraguay with his family for many years running an orphanage. He has much experience of teaching Spanish, German and French at all levels in a wide range of schools.

Mr Evans (Teacher of Spanish, BA - Wales, BSc, MBA) is the Head of Business at Kingham Hill and he also loves languages. His first degree was in French and he has recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Spanish.
