Congratulations go to Lower Sixth pupil Bertie Barker for being recognised as a future leader in engineering by the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship scheme. On Friday 1st November 2019, Bertie was awarded his scholarship at The Institute of Engineering and Technology in London.
Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are awarded to pupils throughout the United Kingdom, who aspire to a career in engineering, computing and related areas of technical design. The Scholarships are awarded through rigorous selection to high-calibre pupils from all of the United Kingdom. Scholarships begin at the start of Lower 6th and consist of an annual financial award to the Scholar and to their school, and a range of enrichment activities that increase a Scholar's understanding of engineering and the world of work, such as mentoring and industry visits. Bertie will help to decide how Kingham uses the money to encourage other future engineers.
To be awarded an Engineering Scholarship, Bertie competed in a 3 stage process of an extended application form describing technical projects and interests beyond the classroom, a two-hour exam, where applicants must set out the practical design and manufacturing methods of their proposed solutions to two stated engineering problems, and an interview hosted at a university renowned for engineering.
A richly deserving scholarship; congratulations, Bertie.
