Cadets Take to the Skies

On Wednesday 25th February, four Kingham Hill RAF Cadets seized a rare break in this term’s relentless rain to take to the skies for their very first Air Experience Flight in the mighty Tutor aircraft at RAF Benson.

The adventure began in earnest with detailed safety briefings, demonstrations and the careful fitting of flying suits, parachutes, gloves and helmets. Then, one by one, they climbed onto the wing of the aircraft and lowered themselves into the cockpit, where they were greeted by their RAF pilot.

Following final checks and a calm but focused introduction, the engine roared into life. A short taxi to the runway, a surge of acceleration - and suddenly the ground fell away beneath them.

Each Cadet enjoyed an unforgettable 30 minutes in the air. Under close supervision, they were trusted with the controls, flying the aircraft themselves and adjusting the flaps as they soared above the Oxfordshire countryside. For the boldest among them, the experience went even further: loops, stall turns and barrel rolls delivered pure adrenaline and more than a few exhilarated grins.

Without exception, every Cadet returned to earth buzzing with excitement and with stomachs perfectly intact. It was a remarkable first taste of military aviation and, who knows, perhaps another step towards future careers in the skies.

Following the experience one of the Cadets commented:
“I was really lucky to have the opportunity to fly with the RAF at such a large airbase, which not many people have the privilege of experiencing. I really loved doing the barrel rolls and loops and being able to fly my own ones afterwards. I also liked getting to wear all the flight gear, so I am grateful to all those staff involved that helped make it all happen.”
