Climbing at Kingham

With regular access to our 7.5 metre indoor climbing wall, climbing has become a popular pursuit for pupils at Kingham Hill.

Recently, the 5th Form PE cohort had the opportunity to hone their skills even further at Far Peak Climbing as they prepare for their GCSE practical assessment!

Reflecting on the experience, pupil Caytano commented, “From the climbing facilities at school and the trip, I have been able to learn a figure of eight knot with the following stopper knot after, as well as learning to belay myself. The climbing wall at school enables me to boost my confidence in both climbing technique and belay technique. The instructor today was great at teaching and telling me several new skills. They were very strict on checking the harness, knots, belay, carabiners etc. every time before climbing which was great to know that safety was the most important thing for them.”

Caytano continued, “My favourite thing about GCSE PE is trying out different sports and using the school’s great facilities such as the gym and sports hall, as well as having access to tracking devices and cameras to investigate my performance in matches, which was great for completing my personal exercise programme.”

Alongside Caytano, who has chosen climbing as one of his three sports for assessment, pupils with no climbing experience prior to Kingham Hill, have also found a love for the sport. Keen football and basketball player, Anson, who says climbing has improved his “muscular endurance”, will also demonstrate this sport in his practical.

We wish all of our GCSE PE pupils the best of luck in their upcoming assessments!
