Inspired by Art

Our 4th Form Art pupils, recently travelled to Oxford to visit three museums; the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, The Pitts Rivers Museum and The Ashmolean Museum. The purpose of the visit was to gain inspiration and ideas for their current project based on ‘Natural Forms’.

The pupils spent the first couple of hours drawing from the wonderful specimens in the Museum of Natural History, taking photographs and making notes in their sketchbooks.

After lunch they visited The Pitts Rivers Museum briefly to explore the fascinating artefacts from all parts of the world before walking a short distance to the Ashmolean Museum for a self-guided tour.

There is no substitute for the real thing and that is certainly the case when viewing works of art as you gain a much greater appreciation of the scale, time taken to complete work, the colours used by the artist, the brush marks and attention to detail. It was fantastic to see our pupils engaging with works on display and reading the information to improve their knowledge and understanding.

Following their return the pupils have been completing their museum research in their sketchbooks and it is very clear by the high standard of work how much they enjoyed the visit and felt that it was a worthwhile trip. They will now be making using this work as inspiration to develop new ideas over the next few weeks.
