Kingham Hill Book Day

On Friday 21st March, Kingham Hill celebrated the magic of reading with its very own Book Day!

As is tradition, pupils arrived at school dressed as characters from their favourite fiction and non-fiction reads. From group costumes inspired by fictional fairy series Rainbow Magic to beloved classics such as Winnie the Pooh, many pupils embraced the books that first ignited their passion for reading as children.

It was also a delight to see a number of creative, home-made outfits, including one costume featuring a cardboard axe adorned with a deck of cards to represent the executioner from Alice in Wonderland. Other pupils, such as Rob, proudly championed their sporting heroes and shared how their stories had inspired them.

At breaktime, in a turn from usual events, pupils relished the opportunity to get ‘Loud in the Library’, singing their favourite karaoke songs, and guessing the #shelfies - a series of photos featuring staff members’ bookshelves.

In the afternoon, 1st and 2nd Form became immersed in other worlds with award-winning author Christopher Edge, as they solved riddles and collected clues to make it out of the Black Hole Cinema Club. Following their escape, Christopher kindly signed copies of his books and answered eager questions about his latest release Escape Room: Game Zero, to be published on 5th June.

Librarian, Mrs Saxby, expressed her gratitude for the enthusiasm surrounding the event: “A huge THANK YOU to everyone that got involved in our Kingham Hill Book Day,” she commented, “to those that read for six minutes each lesson, dressed up as a favourite character, designed images, wrote stories or poems for the magazine, tried the competition, took a World Book Day book, interacted with Christopher Edge and sang at breaktime!”

Mrs Saxby continued “World Book Day is a fantastic time for us to celebrate what we love about reading and remember how beneficial it is for our mental health and brain development. Finding a regular time to enjoy reading builds knowledge, empathy and understanding, as well as helping us to feel more happy and relaxed.”

“I encourage staff, parents and pupils to take time over the Easter holiday to relax with a good book. Don't forget our brilliant Sora service provides eBooks and audiobooks for free wherever you are!”
