Ready for the week ahead, the boys of Plymouth House are celebrating rest and recovery as newly awarded Boarding Schools' Association Sleep Champions!
A good night’s sleep is more than just rest – it is the foundation for focus, growth, and success. To support this the Plymouth House boarding team has introduced structured routines designed to promote better sleep for all boarders. This began with a comprehensive sleep audit, reviewing bedtimes, lights-out procedures, evening timetables, noise levels, lighting, and room environments, followed by a targeted improvement plan.
Age-appropriate evening routines have also been implemented, including dedicated wind-down periods, quiet reading time, and earlier lights-out for younger pupils. Clear device-management expectations, such as pre-sleep curfews and no devices in bedrooms overnight, further support good sleep hygiene. Environmental adjustments, including improved dorm layouts, blackout curtains, reduced night-time noise, and consistent lighting and temperature, help create the ideal sleeping environment.
Pupils are also participating in sleep-education sessions that explore the links between rest, mood, and learning. Since introducing these measures, tutors have observed calmer pre-bed habits, longer and higher-quality sleep, improved daytime wellbeing, and a noticeable reduction in low-level behavioural incidents, particularly overnight and in the early morning.
