Quiz team success

On Tuesday evening, we were very pleased to host Abingdon School for the first round in the Oxford Regional heats of the renowned general knowledge competition, Schools Challenge.  We have entered teams in the competition for the last nine years and have managed to do rather well, finishing in the top three in Oxfordshire more often than not.  This year has seen a reorganisation of regions whereby the erstwhile South-East region has been split into two regions: London and Oxford. Given constraints owing to the pandemic, the usual central tournament fixture could not take place and so, happily, Kingham Hill had the privilege of playing host to a home fixture for the first time.

We entered two teams into the competition: a 1st IV and a 2nd IV. The 1st IV (James Thompson (captain), Millie Eyles, Amelie Hemmings and James Zibarras) have all represented the school in general knowledge quizzing before, having participated in Schools Challenge on several previous occasions.

The 2nd IV (Benjamin Chapel (captain), Samantha Seward, Emily Jones and Finlay Stevens) were a little newer to proceedings.

Both matches were fascinating contests. The 1st IV were beaten by an impressive Abingdon side, 470-270, despite a pleasing performance. The 2nd IV managed to beat Abingdon in the last seconds of a very tense match, 330-300. The 2nd IV will now go on to the Oxford region's Plate Final in February, where they will play the eventual winners of Wycombe Abbey v Magdalen College School, which is due to take place in the coming days.
