Social life

We recognise that, whilst we pride ourselves on being a ‘bit of a bubble on the Hill’ (which has so many positives that the pupils really do mention), the Sixth Formers will want to have a social life and a way for them to relax and enjoy themselves. Whilst not being far from Oxford or indeed London, we are delighted that so many Sixth Form choose to stay at school and make the most of the social activities on offer.

From annual events such as the Winter Ball and Summer Ball, to Sixth Form socials that are dotted around the year, there are lots of highlights that pupils can look forward to.

The designated social space for the Sixth Form is the ‘sixth form bar’, located behind the dining room, which is a fantastic space for socialising and hosting different events. Sixth Form pupils can use the space during break times, lunchtimes and after school to relax and socialise. Coffee and tea are available in the downstairs are and a pool table and other games are provided for Sixth Form use.

The Sixth Form Social Club provides an opportunity for pupils to learn to enjoy drinking responsibly, and to enhance their social experience of KHS. The club runs two ‘bar nights’ per week (Wednesday and Saturday), provides pupils with one alcoholic drink with school tea on Friday and subsidies other social events throughout the year. During Wednesday ‘bar nights’, pupils are able to have one alcoholic drink and then another non-alcoholic drink with a meal provided, and during Saturday ‘bar nights’, pupils are able to have two drinks, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic with a meal.

The costs of the club (catering, drinks etc.) are subsidised from pupil contributions. For 2019-20, the cost is £75 per term per pupil. As well as covering the cost of the Wednesday and Saturday bar nights, this subscription also covers a range of other costs which benefit all Sixth Form pupils: the replacement of equipment such as pool cues and subsidies for special events such as Sixth Form dinners, the Winter Ball, the Sixth Form Summer Ball and leavers’ functions. Pupils in Sixth Form are automatically enrolled into the Sixth Form Social Club but can be withdrawn on request from parents. Those who are not members of the Social Club are still welcome to attend social events, but there may be an additional charge levied for individual events to cover the costs. Non-members can attend bar nights and buy soft drinks, but cannot be given alcohol under the age of 18.

The bar is staffed on a rota by senior staff members who have undertaken internal training in use of the bar and have had the rules and operating procedures explained to them. Staff Rotas for Social Club Bar nights are drawn up by the Headmaster/ Licensee and published for the following term in advance and circulated to all relevant staff.
