Outdoor Pursuits Project
The experience I had at Kingham through adventure pursuits had such a positive effect on my life. I want to make sure that the School continues to offer the same to pupils who are at Kingham today. Andrew, a Hillian from Plymouth and Norwich, 1978-83
We're almost there!
Please help us in this final stage!
Three Phases - One Goal
1. The Assault / Obstacle Course
Phase one of the project raised enough funds to renew and update the obstacle course behind Top School. The work was completed in late February and the course was officially opened at Chill on the Hill, on May 27th. Hillians have supported this project in honour of The Rev (Revd Bob Shepton, 1980-92) who was with us on that day.
2. The Trim Trail
An 8-station timber outdoor fitness course has been installed in and around the lower part of the KHS campus (near the sports centre and senior boys boarding houses). The course includes stations for pull-ups, parallel bars, chin-ups, horizontal ladder, overhead rings, arm stretch, 2-bay platform sit-ups, heaves and lying heaves. This was dedicated to the memory of Les Peake and also opened at Chill on the Hill. Les's family were with us on the day.
3. The Skills House
Located on the site of the Assault Course, there will also be a multipurpose modular Skills House, a 9m x 20m structure that will be available to all pupils for paintballing, first aid learning, CCF manoeuvres, DofE exercises and co-curricular clubs. It will be built on a concrete base and have changeable internal walls and space to allow for a variety of use.
The Rev instilled in me a sense of adventure throughout my whole life. Les Peake taught me the value of self discipline. I'm honored to support this project in their memory and to inspire the current pupils to see the value of these important traits. Anthony, a Hillian from Greenwich, 1986-91
A kind donor has offered to match donations and another donor has provided a commemorative coin to mark the occasion. These will be given to all donors who have given £25 or more and will be handed out at Chill on the Hill.
CCF in the 1980s
Outdoor pursuits have always been a major part of life on the Hill. Hillians speak fondly of their adventures outside where they stretched their limits and learned to work as a team. House competitions used to be held on Speech Day and were run on the previous assault course (behind Greenwich and Severn Houses). Up until seven years ago, clubs, CCF and DofE had the opportunity to train on an outdoor course behind Top School.
In the spirit of a rounded education and of KHS tradition, our aim is to renew the existing out of bounds course and offer more options to pupils, officially celebrating this achievement with the Hillian community at Chill on the Hill.
